Doctor Refused to Treat Biker’s Burned Daughter Because He Had No Insurance

“We don’t treat uninsured patients here.”

I thought I misheard him. I told him my baby was dying. I begged him to help her.

He said the hospital had a strict policy. He told me to try the county hospital forty miles away.

Forty miles. With a child whose skin was sliding off her arms.

I held Mia tighter. I could feel her small body going limp against my chest. Her breathing was barely there.

That’s when the security guard stepped toward us. That’s when the doctor reached for the phone.

I knew right then I had two choices. Watch my daughter die in this lobby. Or do something that would change everything forever.

I set Mia down gently on the nearest empty gurney. I walked straight up to that doctor. I unzipped my vest and pulled out the leather case I’d been carrying for thirty-two years.
